Let's Learn: PEMDAS

Description

Teaching the order of operations poses challenges such as complex concepts, confusion, misunderstandings, lack of practice, and math anxiety. Solutions involve tailored strategies, visual aids, and a supportive environment to enhance students' understanding and confidence in PEMDAS. This module is designed to introduce students to the concept of PEMDAS, which outlines the order of operations in mathematical expressions. The course is designed to be short and accessible, with the intention to show how the order of operations work, with focus on help students explore how PEMDAS works rather than providing overly challenging problem which can negatively impact a focus on understanding the rules.

Target Audience

Students with misconceptions about the proper use of the order of operations in math. While the concept is usually covered in a standard grade 6 curriculum, it is relevant for all levels of math beyond 6th grade.

Tools Used

Articulate Storyline, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop.

Roles

Instructional Design, Graphic Design, Copywriting, eLearning Development.

Analysis:
The analysis phase addresses challenges in teaching the order of operations to students, including complexities, confusion, misunderstandings, and anxiety. The target audience is struggling students, and a thorough understanding of these hurdles informs tailored strategies.

Design:
Design focuses on a concise and accessible module introducing PEMDAS. Active learning, visual aids, real-world context, ample practice, and a supportive environment are key elements. The module emphasizes understanding over complex problems, using interactive elements to engage students.

Development:
Development translates design into tangible assets, creating an exploratory PEMDAS module with simplified math content. Interactive elements and visuals enhance comprehension, encouraging active learning and engagement.

Implementation:
The module is implemented for the target audience, offering an easily integrated resource. User engagement is fostered through interactive elements, enabling confident exploration of the order of operations.

Evaluation:
Evaluation measures the module's impact through user feedback and assessments, guiding refinements for improved usability and learning outcomes. The goal is to overcome teaching challenges and solidify students' understanding of PEMDAS.
